What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal Disease is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. Also called Gum Disease, it is strongly linked to heart disease and other medical conditions.

Periodontal disease affects approximately 70-80% of the adult population. This translates to 3 out of 4 people becoming effected by periodontal disease at some time in their life. Periodontal disease can also affect children.

Bacterial plaque is the main cause of tooth caries (decay) and periodontal (or gum) disease. Although plaque is the main cause of gum disease, other factors can affect the health of your gums. Gum disease is an ongoing process that destroys the gums and bone which are supporting tissues around the teeth.

Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Periodontal disease can be treated if detected in time. One of our goals is to treat the disease and restore our patients to a level of maintainable periodontal health. Prevention of the recurrence of periodontal disease is another goal of our practice and the focus for our patients whom have undergone periodontal therapy.
